Password generator

Choose a length from 8 to 64 and the sets you want. Characters are picked in your browser. The entropy line is log2 of the alphabet, times the length.

How it works

Each character is an independent draw from the set you enabled. Turning off ambiguous glyphs removes 0, O, o, 1, l and I so a code is easier to read aloud. That also shrinks the alphabet, so the entropy drops a little.

The estimate assumes the full set was available for every position. It does not know about dictionary words because the generator does not use words. A passphrase of several words can be stronger than a short random string you cannot remember; this page makes the random string.

Questions

What is a comfortable length?

For a random password with letters and digits, 16 characters is a practical default. Go longer for a shared secret that will not be typed often.

Should I add symbols?

Only if the system accepts them. Some sites reject a subset, and a rejected password gets reused in a weaker form. Prefer length when the policy allows it.

Is the entropy exact?

It is the ideal entropy of the generator, rounded to one decimal. It is not a score of a password you typed yourself.
